April 16, 2012Dear Sir, my rank in 2012 AIPg is around 800 and I almost decided that I wl take surgery at Mumbai till I stumbled upon this site. And i must say I m very much liking this new subjct abt which I knew so less during my UG days( I m also frm Medical college Kolkata). Acc prev counsellng trends I may possibly make it at TMH mumbai. so I m giving it a serious thought rght now.
Sir i hav two main doubts:
1. I m from a lower middle class famly and getting a well-paid job soon fter Sr ship is of utmost imprtance to me. as I understand it s a very dependnt subjct and no chance of pvt practice,I m lost if I cnt bag a job worth at least 50k. will dat b difficult?
2. And y s dere no pvt practice. One can open a consultncy and see cancer pts refd to him by medicine folks, cnt he?
3. Doing JR and SR ship frm TMH,wl it b an advantage to get DM onco at TMH itslf?
Regards
Sutanu (2005-2011 batch)

April 16, 2012Well if u ask about my opinion i would go for radiation oncology instead of surgery. Reasons
1. No superspecialisation required
2. MD at TMH nothing like it u dont have to waste years after MD to work in good centers which is a must for MD in other centers.
3.Disadvantage is u may not be able to work in your home town which is very much possible after surgery.
4. If u want to know more about radiation oncology u may log in our website isocenter.org

May 4, 2012sir, my question is
is it possible for every rad onco to do sr residency at TMH&WHAT is the processor &requirements to achieve this.pls provide information…
Dr Suman Das
May 4, 2012Dear Rajesh
we may not say all but most of the students who are keen to join TMH are accepted either as senior resident or fellow. The main requirement they look for is few publication and good thesis work during MD. Most important is your luck during oral examination. Many boys are not selected at first attempt and they join as fellows and later on are accepted as senior residents.
Thanx

May 28, 2012sir took rgkar radt………..plz advice me reg books……as the syll is already there in isocenter….thnks.

June 8, 2012Hello sir,it is really nice to see ur blog sir.i have recently completed my md raiation oncology at kidwai.i have a dream of working for sometime atleast in tmh, have applied for sr ship, but i saw ur blog ,sir i dont have publications,is there any way to make up by doing the exam well or so…..if so kindly guide me sir,of what to read…
it would be of great help sir.
thank u sir
Dr Suman Das
June 8, 2012Hi Lavanya i think what ever u have read in your MD will be enough to fetch u a SR in TMH. Never mind if u dont have publication as u cant do any thing now and people with no publications also get selected and with publication may not get selected. Its all the theory and the viva how u perform.
My suggestion is just appear if u get selected its fine if not then dont get disheartened u can learn at so many institutes in India. I was really shattered when i was placed in waiting list of TMH and was not called for but honestly today i dont have any regrets i am very much satisfied with the training i got and can confidently take descisions for treatment. All the Best

December 4, 2012Sir I would like to know about MD Radiotherapy in AIIMS, New Delhi? In comparison to TMH, Mumbai. Also prospects of Radiotherapy in relation to Nuclear medicine? I have a chance to get the subject in both of these places
Dr Suman Das
December 4, 2012Dear shweta first of all congrats for getting chance to do M.D. in pioneering institutes. In radiation oncology tmh Mumbai is the best as far as your training and future is concerned. If u want to join radiation then go for tmh no second thoughts. Radiation oncology is better than nuclear medicine in view of involvement of clinical studies. I chose radiation in comparison to nuclear medicine.
Thanx
Shweta
December 7, 2012Thank you sir. I have also heard that chemotherapy is also an integral part of what a radiation oncologist does. And also future scope?? A lot of my friends are interested in this field

March 7, 2013I’m a 2nd yr PGT in dept of radiotherapy of medical college, kolkata . Post MD,I have no preferences for Govt sector jobs. Can you please enlighten me on institutes (other than TMH of course) where i may pursue SRship in perspective of a future pvt. sector radiation oncology consultant. The private sector is already over-saturated in Kolkata, so prospects are bleak in Kolkata. Also, kindly inform me on overseas radiation oncology fellowships. Regards, Dr. Anindya
Dr Suman Das
March 16, 2013Dear anindya sorry for such a late reply to you. well its ok if u really dont want to join govt but never think private is a cake walk. What you see in private is tip of iceberg. At the end of the day the number matters in private.
Anyways always in my opinion you need at least 2 to 3 yrs of experience in a good place with quality work so as to cope with situation in private sector.

May 29, 2013Dear Sir,
I am joining DNB Radiotherapy at Mahavir Cancer Sansthan Patna
Can you please guide me on the following
1. Any idea about how the institution is ?.
2. After DNB Radiotherapy am I eligible for SR ship at TMH Mumbai
3. After DNB am I eligible for doing DM in medical oncology.? I saw you said it is not preferred career. Can you please guide why?
4. For publication what Initiative I can take during DNB course?
Thanks
Dr Suman Das
May 29, 2013Dear Minakshi
Congratulations for joining the fleet of radiation oncologists of India.
I am extremely sorry as i dont have any idea about the Mahavir cancer institute.
Yes after passing DNB you will be eligible for SR ship in TMH.
As a radiation oncologist you can have lots of work to do so no need to join medical oncology. If you are interested to join medical oncology then better do MD medicine you will have better scope and more opportunity for getting medical oncology.
For publication initiative be after your prof and atleast during your tenure publish some original papers or case reports etc.
Minakshi
May 29, 2013Thank you for your quick reply. I will keep your words in mind.
Will be on contact with you

Dr Suman Das
June 25, 2013Congratulations and welcome to the group. its your call plz discuss with your senior colleagues in your city about the scenario and then decide. There is nothing like avg salary it all depends where you are working and how u are practisisng. Some people earn very hefty and some may be earning reasonable. so the situation is different in different states.

Should I take chance of tata ..and risk my desired branch ??..waiting for your reply sir..

August 29, 2013If u r getting Tata go for it. Take risk. Infact for TMH its worth taking risk.

September 17, 2013why dont you raise a concern to stop growing tobacco in india and use the same agricultural land to grow crops, stop selling the product and no one would die.
file a pitition to st the company and do better in other businesses, stop selling alcohol and smokes and ban it nationwide to raise concern. shwing cancer paitinet before the movie starts or putting a cancer affected lung picture on the cover of cigarette packs is not going to stop smoking. we as a nation and youth need to stop the company from selling it and as a ccompany they need to invest on other industry.
Dr Suman Das
September 17, 2013There have been several inititiatives taken in the past infact thats why the tobacco is banned in many states (officially), several legislation put forward but above all so many other factors which can not be mentioned are there. Still the scenario is improving and we expect it to improve furthur.
Thanx for the feedback

February 14, 2014sir….. im interested in radiotherapy but i heard it positively from few and negatively from many…… according to my AIPG rank i will get radiotherapy ,dgo… i couldnt decide…. im from andhra pradesh,,,i heard from few of my friends that if u we want to settle in ap dot opt for radiotherpy… so plz give me valuable advice regarding……
Dr Suman Das
February 24, 2014Its a subject not known to many and can not really get a good feedback from everyone. its a very unconventional subject as people are not aware about it. U have to decide based on the place you want to settle. here it all depends on you how u r going to do in your future.

February 25, 2014Sir, I’ve been following this wonderful blog of yours for quite sometime, I have some interest in this area, although I must admit I have little knowledge of Oncology. I’m about to join a residency and as it stands now my options are OB-Gyn and Radiation Oncology. It’s a very hard call for me. I’d be very grateful if you could help me in this dilemma with some light on the following topics.
1. Radiation exposure, reproductive health, I am a girl sir.
2. The post MD 5year route, SRship, Fellowship, when does one become a consultant in an institution of repute. Which are the best places to look for post MD?
3. The Job prospects, the demand-supply situation
4. Quality of life, work load, emergencies if any (Sir, if you can please compare it to Ob-Gyn in this regard) and mental health considering the grim fate of a significant number of patients.
5. Further education training opportunities, fellowships abroad, and in India, what is FRCR?
6. Does it include other treatments like Chemotherapy as well, what includes the practice scopes of a RT specialist, what is excluded.
7. Sir, I know it’s one bit rude to ask about 5 year into the job median salary expectation, but I could do good with a median picture in the regard of remuneration as I’ve already gathered the same info on OB-Gyn.
I did my MBBS from Kolkata and hope to do my residency this year from this very city. I hail from Bhubaneswar.

May 7, 2014In a subject like radiotherapy you have to be institution dependent and money is a relative term. Many people earn a lot and many people have less it is like private practice if you have better skills and you have more patients you earn more if not less. In govt sector u will be getting same as per UGC. About chemo therapy u can practice chemo in solid tumors but it depends on you.

May 8, 2014Dear Jigar,
Plz think about all the factors and decide which subject will be better for u. It is not advisable to take anyone advise to which subject you should choose.
