Election in Democratic India: Still a long way to go for easy acessibility

I just now voted for the election 2014. While standing in line few things came in my mind just wanted to put it on paper and share.election

  1. Voter List: Many people live in a different place than their voter list. All are not that much aware and also many don’t have that much determination to change their name to the current list. Certain things need to be changed or arranged at least by next election.
    1. Universal Voter list: Any one can vote from any place.
    2. All the private and government organization head will take this as personal initiative to ensure all their employees have their names registered.
  2. Political Volunteer: One volunteer came forward to help me find the place of my booth. I was really happy that this time election commission has done such good arrangement. After helping me the volunteer said sir “Please vote for *****”. I was furious and asked please tell me why should i vote for congress then the young man said “its for development plz vote for *****”. I just replied the man young man nice way of rigging. I am afraid these guys will could definitely influence the uneducated people. They should be kept away from the booth area.
  3. Special care for older people and disabled: I don’t know if this facility has been arranged but in the place I voted there was none. All older people were standing for more than 1 hr which is bad for their health. I requested the official who was managing the booth but he said a valid point “Sir if I do that every person will come forward with some or other problem requesting for jumping the line”. I feel there should be some arrangement like sitting with water facility etc for elderly and disabled person.
  4. Avoid events which keep people away: Quite similar to the notification published one day back that every one will be given paid holiday on the day of election, the govt or the election commission should ask all organisations to avoid any events which will keep the employees away from their voting place.  As for example the IPL was being held out of country and i am sure many Indian cricketers would have failed to a attend the election. more over every Individual should have his own conscience to be present and vote.
  5. VVIP care: A VVIP with his family came and jumped the line to vote first. I inquired he is some top police official, I feel this should not be allowed.
  6. Language of Signage: In majority of voting booths only local language is used for the signage but as in towns many people are not locals hence should be in local language and also a common language like Hindi or English.

All these points are my personal observation. I request my readers to suggest their observations which could be added also. In our country due to the vast population and also lack of infrastructure these are not easy task but I am sure one fine day the election commission can take into account these points in forthcoming elections.
