Emotional outcomes after cancer diagnosis: ways to overcome it….

When a patient is diagnosed with cancer not only the patient but also the family members and the care givers pass through a life changing experience. The different reasons for these changes include

  • Role of the family member in the family. The person may be the bread winner, he may be the person who takes family descisions, or the person may be the most loved ones in the family.
  • The helplessness of the person who does not have any control over the events in his life.
  • Change in shape or image of the body after the treatment. Change in face after surgery in head and neck cancer/ Chane in shape of breast after mastectomy surgery.
  • Fear of sufferings from the scary chemotherapy/ Radiotherapy. The chemotherapy and radiotherapy sound very scary and many relatives with limited knowledge scare the patient and family
  • Fear of death of the person himself or the fear of losing the loved ones.

How to overcome the anxiety after cancer diagnosis?

Some things we cannot change ifanyone is affected by cancer the most important is the willpower and the willingness to fight the menace and take charge of the situation.

  • Reach the cancer care givers and remember always cancer is curable if diagnosed early and if it is treated in the scientifically correct protocol.
  • Always be with your loved ones and never make them feel about the disease. Many times I have seen the children are very anxious and they make the life of the patient very difficult. Have patience and follow the advice by the cancer care giver.
  • Many people are anxious about the symptoms and side effects of the chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In fact I will never say that these treatments do not have any side effect but they can be easily dealt with by following the advice of your oncologist.
  • Encourage the patient to continue the treatment, speak to your physician for the symptoms may be a good counseling is often helpful.
  • Promote the patient for physical activity may be a walk or mild exercise is helpful.
  • Engage your loved ones in conversations and a positive energy around is always helpful. Encourage to talk but never force.

“Diagnosis of cancer is not death sentence”. It’s just a disease and it can be fought with attitude. Godbless
