Celebration of World Photography Day: Visual Odyssey through my lens

Introduction

Every year, 19th of August ignites a global celebration called “World Photography Day”. This date, etched in history as the official recognition of image processing, serves as an ode to an art that transcends time and technology. World Photography Day encapsulates the essence of capturing fleeting moments through lenses, a practice that has evolved from film rolls to the digital era.

In this blog, join me in traversing my personal expedition through the evolution of photography, a voyage that resonates with the photographer in each of us. Let’s celebrate World Photography Day.

Camera With Roll (Film Photography)

Travelling back to the 90s, a time when the camera carried rolls of film, unveils a nostalgic chapter. Each roll of film was a treasure of limited moments be it 24 or 36. The camera needed careful handling to avoid unnecessary loss of the film or roll. Remember school picnics and events, when the roll would be shared among friends, each frame capturing a slice of our shared memories.

The excitement of getting the perfect shot, waiting for the film to be developed, and holding a tangible photograph in your hands, these experiences remain etched in time. Even the imperfections, like streaks of light passing through the photo, closed eyes, odd postures etc hold a charm that’s hard to replicate in today’s digital age. We never knew about the World Photography Day in those times.

Digital Camera

The arrival of digital cameras redefined the landscape of photography. Instant viewing on screens behind the lens revolutionised photography. It gave way to limitless shots, this period marked a step toward instant gratification in capturing moments. My first digital camera, a sleek companion, easily pocketed like today’s smartphones.

Point and Shoot Camera

My journey gained momentum with a gifted Canon point-and-shoot camera, my portal to photography’s intricacies. Under the mentorship of a senior colleague, I explored framing, composition, focal lengths, apertures, ISO settings more importantly how to hold the camera. This prized possession laid the cornerstone of my photographic voyage. Despite the absence of formal knowledge, creativity shaped my captured moments.

DSLR Camera

Transitioning to a DSLR was pivotal. Delving into camera manuals, principles of photography and light manipulation expanded my horizons. Comprehending the interplay between settings, experimenting with compositions etc, these avenues unlocked creative potential. Photography became more than capturing a moment; it evolved into sculpting light and narrative. The joy of capturing a perfect portrait or landscape mirrored images from wallpapers was out of the world.

Mobile Photography

With smartphones equipped with powerful cameras, mobile photography became accessible to all. The fusion of technology and creativity turned everyone into potential photographers. But beyond the convenience lies the essence of capturing the world in a unique way, a testament to the democratisation of this art form. The genre of mobile photography and the convenience of having it with us anytime gives the opportunity of capturing moments which was not possible earlier days.

Guidance and Insights

Connection with seasoned photographers transformed my journey. I learned that essence lay not in capturing numerous images to accumulate digital garbage but in seizing the right moment. Adjusting composition, mastering light and orchestrating the interplay of elements moulded narrative and emotion.

Tricks of trade:

Embrace Your Unique Perspective: Remember that your perspective is what makes a photograph truly special. Don’t hesitate to capture the scenes and moments that resonate with you, regardless of how others might perceive them. Your photographs are a reflection of your memories and experiences, so keep clicking with passion and authenticity. Every image you capture holds a piece of your story, and it’s this personal touch that adds depth and meaning to your work.

Harness the Power of Unconventional Creativity: Break free from the notion that photography should be bound by strict rules. While understanding the fundamentals can be helpful, don’t be afraid to bend or even break them to achieve captivating results.

Embrace Patience and Timing as Allies: Remember, great photography is often the result of perfect timing and patience. Waiting for the right moment to unfold can lead to breathtaking and memorable shots. As you embark on your photography journey, practice patience, and hone your ability to anticipate those split-second instances that transform an ordinary scene into an extraordinary memory.

Equip Yourself with Passion, Not Just Gear: While having advanced camera equipment can certainly enhance your technical capabilities, don’t let gear become a barrier to your creativity. Instead of fixating on having the latest gadgets, focus on mastering the tools you have at hand. The true magic of photography lies in your ability to see and capture the beauty of the world around you.

Compose Thoughtfully, Capture Intentionally: Pay attention to the elements within your frame, and understand how they interact to tell your story. A small shift in perspective or the inclusion of a seemingly insignificant detail can transform an ordinary scene into a masterpiece.

Conclusion

Keep these tips in mind as guiding principles for your photographic journey. Remember, photography is not just about capturing images; it’s about preserving moments, emotions, and memories that will last a lifetime. Embrace the freedom to express yourself, learn from your experiences, and let your passion for photography continue to evolve.

Photography transcends pressing buttons; it’s about perceiving with an artistic eye, curious mind and affinity for light. World Photography Day celebrates an art form and its evolution – a testament to human expression and stories held in every photograph. This day reminds us that a photograph isn’t just visual; it’s an imprint of imagination, captured by eyes, choreographed by mind, and painted with the magic of light.

I have seen you during our journey since Mbbs, you have correctly nurtured the things that makes you a thoughtful human who compels his fellow to think on sadhana, grit , perseverance ,and all these not to achieve success but to be a mature soul who craves for nature, understands minds and loves the other side of life away from those limelights….
Mere profession ( we both happen to be oncologist) is not going to satisfy the soul and there are so many things to aspire for is another thing to learn from you brother…
Here is another aspect of you… superb pics captured at the right angle and light , perception, and moment. Congratulations

Perfect justification for a Radiation Oncologist being a passionate photographer. In Radiation Oncology always we talk about a target captured through different forms of imaging like CT, MRI, PET, EPID, CBCT, IGRT etc & the reverse is true here in photography where we talk about an image capturing different targets.

    Excellent bhai!!!

    Proud of you

There are only a chosen few who go beyond their length to perceive their passion.. The rest, only keep thinking.

Sometimes situations in life make us function like machines, where we forget that we do have aspirations and hobbies to pursue. Its people like you, who inspire people like me, that i still can put wings to my passion.

A nicely written article depicting the evolution of photography. I remember during the school days we used to make cameras using a single lens and get an inverted image on the screen. At that time colour photography was not very popular.
While in college, used to make a temporary studio and made negative films in the dark rooms. Those days very few were lucky to have a camera and the running cost was too high.
