The cell phones emit radiofrequency waves.Thee radiofrequency waves are nonionising type of radiation (Ionising type like X Rays have proven risk of cancer on prolonged exposure).

Can Mobile phone use cause Cancer?

The evidence on risk of cancer with the use of mobile phones is still controversial. The different studies using both human and animal model till now does not show any definite evedence of risk of mlignancy. The Danish study was one of the largest studies taking more than 420000 population over 20 years and it showed no increase in incidence of cancer with use of mobile phone. Many other studies like INTERPHONE project  also did not show any significant increase in incidence of cancer. But it showed some evidence of increased incidence of Glioma in people having more cumulative usage. Thus  considering the present time the sharp increase in cumulative duration of use of  mobile phone  especially by young population  which was different from the time of above mentioned studies it needs strong consideration for studies to be conducted now.

Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) recommends  “that, due to the lack of any data relating to children and long term use of mobile phones, parents encourage their children to limit their exposure by reducing call time, by making calls where reception is good, by using hands-free devices or speaker options, or by texting”.

On 31 May 2011 the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B).  They concluded mainly using the INTERPHONE study.

Considering the above mentioned data my personal opinion is the incidence of cancer with mobile phone usage is not well established but we need to be aware that may be with increased cumulative duration of use it can have some carcinogenic effect.
