Ganesh Puja : the joyful celebration of Lord Ganesha
The Ganesh Puja holds a special place in the hearts of millions across India. It’s said that when you begin your day with a heartfelt “Jai Ganesh,” success is bound to follow. Lord Ganesha’s wisdom and blessings are cherished by all, making him a beloved deity in every temple.
In this blog i will take you through the memory lane how we all celebrated Ganesh Puja in our lifetime.
Ganesh Puja at Home:
In every Indian home, Ganesh Puja is a cherished tradition. Lord Ganesh finds a loving abode in our hearts, and his idols take on countless innovative forms. From our early years, before we even set foot in school, Ganesh Puja is a part of our lives. We place our books and notebooks near Lord Ganesha, seeking his divine guidance. For children, it’s a sweet escape from studies, eagerly awaiting the distribution of delicious ladoos during the Puja.
School Days and Display of creativity:
During our school days, Ganesh Puja becomes a grand affair. It teaches us the art of planning and executing intricate stage setups and arrangements. Students from different classes unite, pooling their diverse ideas to create a magnificent stage for Lord Ganesha. The creativity on display is awe-inspiring.
I fondly recall a senior’s creation of snow-clad mountains using school blankets, trees, powder, cotton for snow, and twinkling lights. The celebration fosters discipline and camaraderie among children, leaving us all with a sense of pride and accomplishment.
College Days and the Festival of Ganesh Puja:
In college, Ganesh Puja takes on a whole new level of excitement. Hostels compete to showcase their creative prowess, resulting in a spirited atmosphere of friendly rivalry. Creative rangolis adorn the campus, and students excitedly compare whose is the most impressive. This celebration ignites our innovative spirit, bringing forth fresh ideas and camaraderie among peers.

Puja Pandals:
Cities across India see various Puja committees presenting imaginative concepts to attract visitors. The creativity knows no bounds, from mythology-inspired themes to current affairs. Puja pandals like the iconic Lal Bagh in Mumbai draw crowds in the thousands daily. Ganesh Puja embodies the unity in diversity of our nation, as people from every corner celebrate with unique flair. The festivities, often spanning weeks, feature entertaining musical programs, setting the stage for the upcoming Dussehra season.
Community Celebrations:
Ganesh Puja thrives in communities and societies. Residents come together, contributing in various ways, be it financially or by preparing Prasad for devotees. This camaraderie provides a platform for social interaction in our busy lives, forging new friendships and fostering a sense of togetherness. Cultural programs, including devotional songs and dance performances, give residents the chance to showcase their talents.
Conclusion:
Ganesh Puja is not just a religious observance but a celebration that sets the tone for India’s upcoming festive season. It’s a platform for us to express our creativity and a testament to the diverse culture that unites under a single devotion – Lord Ganesha. Jai Ganesh, the beloved deity who blesses us with wisdom and success. RPReplay_Final1694973304

September 18, 2023Well described doc.. I always debate with friends that modern/western forces discourage celebration of Holi and Bhogi on the name of pollution without understanding our emotional connect with all these festivals.

September 19, 2023Let wisdom be our guide in what we are about to do. Suman is surely getting wiser day by day , beyond duality of human mind. Let wisdom allow him to see all as one , and serve for all. Pray Lord Ganesha to bless him.

September 19, 2023Doctor saab,
On a lighter note, I truly cherish the nostalgia and cultural milieu brought about by your comments. On a heavier note, I would have appreciated if you had brought closure on Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations by giving some insights on whether such large Ganeshas are necessary to stoke our passion or spirits. What does one do with such large Ganesha POP’s which are being used nowadays which are not biodegradable? Is it making our devotion or fervour any less by using smaller Ganeshas which can be disposed off gently into the night, and cut out the storm of ungainly bits and pieces which precipitate our wisdom when we see them the next few days?
Dr Suman Das
September 19, 2023Point well taken sir. Thank you for your response and bringing out the important aspect. Its good to see we are moving towards the eco friendly Ganesh statues rather than POP.

September 19, 2023Beautifully narrated sir, with changing times nowadays these moments are missing. Number of pandals have come down. Festive fervour too has come down. Have seen people throng markets in the morning to bring him into the house and by evening had thronged the water bodies to give him send off the same day itself. One change which I observed is, people are preferring Mud idols more nowadays and even the bigger idols are Eco friendly as they are being made by mud and straw..
Dr Suman Das
September 19, 2023Thank You sir for a lovely response. We are moving forward to more ecofriendly way now. I was shocked to see many schools not celebrating the puja. It gives a good feel to children.

September 19, 2023Dr. Suman Beautifully written…
to share of your experiences with Ganesh Puja. experiences and aspirations along every every year and puja.
My thoughts on Ganesh Puja.
My Dad being a Naval Officer we would be transferred every 2-2.5 yrs to various naval coast cities.
My mom always had her puja items in one very smart wooden box.
Even to date she uses the same set just with a few deletions.
Our Ganesha was a mini 4”inch high wet haldi triangular looking Ganesha …mum made the eyes, trunk, butto & the his mouse chariot too.
We placed our books , chanted, prayed, sang songs and ate some very unique delicious items made.
The puja was simple and of great pride to us several neighbours, other naval officers families came and offered their salutations.
TODAY…Ganesh Puja has become a sense of competition and a BIG environmental disaster.
The higher, the bigger, is all that’s spoken about.
The simple essence of the Lord’s Puja seems to have disappeared.
Anyway he is Lord of all beginnings and prosperity.
